Case Study | Hangzhou Electronic Information Vocational School Shuangqiao Campus: 16,000 m² of Stone Veneer — A Lively Expression of Travertine Texture

Hangzhou Electronic Information Vocational School Shuangqiao Campus: 16,000 m² of flexible stone — a lively expression of travertine texture.

Hangzhou Justone New Material Co., LTD.

Hangzhou Electronic Information Vocational School Shuangqiao Campus is located in the core area of Hangzhou's "Cloud City." To its northwest lies the Yungu Campus of Westlake University, and it is surrounded by high-tech parks such as the Yungu Industrial Park. Against this regional backdrop, the facade design of the campus faced the challenge of integrating with the surrounding environment from the outset—it needed to match the technological and modern character of "Cloud City" without appearing abrupt or disconnected.

In 2022, Justone flexible stone was deeply involved in the construction of the school, supplying 16,000 square meters of exterior wall products from the GT105 series with travertine texture. The design team ultimately chose a combination of Justone flexible stone and aluminum panels. Perforated aluminum panels in different positions were composed with varying hole diameters, incised with a plum blossom pattern, while the flexible stone covered the large main facades. Together, they created a smooth, modern campus skyline.

From Sample Board to Wall: A Story of "Liveliness"

At the start of the project, the design team initially considered solid-color travertine—with an even beige base and a warm, smooth texture. However, after repeated comparisons and sample testing, they found that solid-color travertine had a rather "quiet" character, which did not quite fit the campus design positioning of being "free, open, and full of vitality." As a result, the material selection shifted toward textured travertine.

Unlike solid-color travertine, textured travertine features natural streak variations on the surface, creating a subtle sense of depth as light and shadow move across it. It is not a static wall surface, but one with "expressions."

The choice of color shade also went through repeated adjustments. The designers wanted a warmer tone than the initially recommended GT104, so that it would better echo the plum blossom patterns cut into the perforated aluminum panels. After several rounds of color adjustment, the custom GT105 was born—perfectly matching the overall tone of the building.

Aluminum Panels and Flexible Stone: A Dialogue Between Two Materials

The facade design of Shuangqiao Campus is distinctive: perforated aluminum panels and flexible stone alternate to create a rhythmic contrast between solid and void. The aluminum panels define the building's contours and technological character, while the flexible stone covers the large wall areas, giving the architecture a warm, understated base.

To achieve a seamless transition between the two materials, the construction plan involved detailed design development: the joint pattern of the travertine flexible stone needed to align with the vertical tight-joint installation of the aluminum panels—only horizontal joints were retained, with no vertical joints. In this way, the vertical lines of the aluminum panels continue uninterrupted, and although the flexible stone areas differ in material, they maintain a unified visual rhythm. From a distance, the aluminum panels and flexible stone appear almost as a single material, distinguished only by their texture.

This joint alignment, highly consistent with the vertical tight-joint installation of the aluminum panels, achieves visual continuity and coordination.

sharp sheen of the aluminum panels — one cool, one warm — giving the building facade greater depth and layering.

Why is this project worth attention?

Beyond its aesthetic value, the application of Justone flexible stone at Shuangqiao Campus also solved several practical issues. The school building is primarily used by teenagers, so the safety of exterior wall materials is the most fundamental requirement—Justone flexible stone weighs only 1/20 of natural stone, and its bond strength far exceeds the national standard, eliminating any risk of detachment. At the same time, the construction period for the new campus was tight; the veneer can be cut with a utility knife and is easy to install, allowing for high construction efficiency and ensuring on-time delivery.

In addition, the special bonding adhesive contains no cement, providing flexible waterproofing and preventing efflorescence. Even in Hangzhou's rainy and humid climate, the wall surface remains stable over the long term. Good constructability combined with strong adhesion is what ensures lasting results. With these three concerns addressed, it is no surprise that the client recognized the value of the project.

The case of Hangzhou Electronic Information Vocational School Shuangqiao Campus demonstrates an important industry trend: exterior wall decoration can balance aesthetics, efficiency, and cost without having to compromise among the three.

What Justone flexible stone offers is not simply a "material substitution," but a systematic solution—it satisfies the architectural pursuit of aesthetics (dynamic textures, customized color shades), responds to the engineering demand for efficiency (easy installation, controllable construction period), and meets the basic standards for safety and durability in public buildings (lightweight yet high-strength, green and environmentally friendly).

This is also why, after the completion of the Shuangqiao Campus project, the Second Affiliated Middle School of Hangzhou Normal University adopted the same approach in its design—a good solution deserves to be replicated.
