An exterior wall is exposed to wind, sun, and rain. Cracks can be patched, and spalling can be redone—but once water seeps in, repairing any part is useless.

Water seeps in through cracks, causing the insulation layer to become damp and fail, the plaster layer to hollow and fall off, and interior walls to grow moldy and peel. Every repair means putting up scaffolding again—costly and disruptive to residents. A wall that water cannot get into is a good wall.

How does water get in?

There are three core causes of exterior wall seepage:

First, the material itself is not waterproof. Many wall materials (such as ordinary coatings and certain decorative panels) have high water absorption. Rainwater lands on the surface and slowly penetrates; over time, moisture works its way into the wall.

Second, there are gaps in the bonding layer. Traditional cement mortar becomes hard and rigid after drying, and shrinkage produces microcracks. Water seeps in along these cracks—before the substrate cracks, the bonding layer has already opened up.

Third, efflorescence. Cement-based materials release soluble salts, forming white powder on the wall surface. This is not only unsightly, but also damages the bonding interface and accelerates moisture penetration.

Flexible Stone Waterproofing System: Two Barriers

The waterproofing approach of Justone flexible stone is not to “block” the surface, but to form a complete waterproofing system.

First barrier: The flexible stone itself blocks water

Flexible stone is made from natural quartz sand and stone powder. It has a dense structure and low water absorption. When rainwater falls on the surface, it cannot penetrate; it can only flow down along the wall.

      

Second barrier: Waterproofing by the specialty adhesive mortar

Justone’s proprietary adhesive mortar is a non-cement-based, waterproof, polymer bonding mortar—put simply, it is not cement, but a polymer material. Its biggest difference from traditional cement mortar is this: cement “locks” materials together by hard-on-hard contact, while adhesive mortar “bonds” them by growing together.

Cement mortar relies on mechanical interlocking—it shrinks after drying and uses friction to “clamp” the materials in place. Over time, as temperatures fluctuate and the wall moves, the cement layer begins to crack and loosen.

The bonding logic of adhesive mortar is completely different. It works through three mechanisms:

First, penetration. Adhesive mortar is a fine slurry. Before curing, it can penetrate into the microscopic pores on the substrate surface; after curing, it forms a physical anchor—not “stuck on the surface,” but “grown into it.”

Second, molecular-level bonding. Active molecules in the adhesive mortar adsorb to and bond with molecules on the substrate surface and the back of the flexible stone , creating a tight fit at the molecular level. It is not surface adhesion, but molecular adhesion.

Third, chemical bonding. As the adhesive mortar cures, active molecules chemically react with molecules on the substrate surface, forming high-strength chemical bonds. Traditional mortar relies on “friction,” while adhesive mortar relies on “chemical force”—one is physical interlocking, the other is chemical bonding; they are not on the same level at all.

Another important feature: flexible connection, not rigid resistance

Adhesive mortar is not hard and stiff; it has a certain flexibility. When a wall undergoes thermal expansion and contraction or slight settlement, the flexible adhesive mortar layer can absorb and dissipate deformation stress like a spring, forming a “flexible connection” between the flexible stone and the wall—when the wall moves, it moves with it; when the wall doesn’t move, it doesn’t either. It doesn’t resist rigidly, and it doesn’t crack.

In one sentence: cement mortar relies on “locking in place,” while adhesive mortar relies on “growing together.” One is physical, the other is chemical—they are not even in the same dimension.

Actual verification: It rained the day after completion

For an office building perimeter wall renovation project in Maoming, Guangdong, Justone slate and granite series flexible stone was used.
